Siblius Scorch
for String Quartet and Pipa
While fusion culture has emerged to be lively and reformed phenomena nowadays, it brings the world closer and extends our vision boundless as well. As a composer, I find there are so many to absorb and there are so many to share. To create a piece for the international celebrated and influential Kronos Quartet and Wu Man, the Pipa virtuoso, I believe it is an opportunity to present the rich and distinct music, dance and custom of the ethnic minorities in China to the world. Through this piece, I intend to create a platform where western meets eastern and modern civilization meets aboriginal tradition. Tribe Among Mountains depicts the daily life and custom of the minority tribes among the mountain area in south-western China. The music components 6 movements with non stop between each of them and should be performed continually.
The earth is the mother of the creatures. In the early spring season, the mountain people who wearing masks, play music with their unique traditional instruments to worship the earth. It is a ritual of reverence and appreciation.
The buffalo fighting is one of the most exciting games when the tribes celebrate in their festivals.
Music is a perfect means for the youths to find his/her beloved under the moonlight.
“The bride has been looted!” A loud sound breaks up the quiet in the village. People in two sides show their braveness to fight for a bride and loot her from each other. Looting, defending, and chanting. What a crowded and rough love. Don’t worry, it is just the mountain people’s another traditional game.
The warriors are going to leave their home town for hunting. The clarions reecho among the village and the hunters begin their journey. The distance will not alienate their love from their families and homeland.
In the golden autumn, the tribe people play music with Lusheng and dance together. They celebrate the harvest and appreciate God who grant them peace and happiness. Duration
